Health Naturally Occurring Retirement Communities: A Low-cost Approach to Healthy Aging
When:Friday, February 29, 2008, from
12:00 p.m. to
1:00 p.m.
Where: Auditorium, First Floor, Élisabeth Bruyère Health Centre
Dr. Masotti’s presentation will describe his work surrounding Naturally Occurring Retirement Communities.
Naturally Occurring Retirement Communities (NORCs) are defined as communities where people remain or move to when they retire. NORCs develop ‘naturally’ (residences were not built/pre-planned for a senior population) and demographic trends will facilitate a dramatic growth in NORCs in the future.
Acknowledging the ‘Determinants of Health’ model, we suggest that:
a) determinants impact people differently at different ages;
b) some determinants of health are particularly relevant for seniors; and
c) that more attention be focused on the impact of physical/social environments on health.
Given the impact of the local environment, we argue that Municipal governments have a role in promoting healthy aging and should pursue policies that will stimulate Healthy NORC development
