End-of-Life Care for Seniors – New Emerging Team

An Initiative from the Palliative Care Research Group

ELCS

Dr. Pierre Allard, Director of the Palliative Care Research Group at the Élisabeth Bruyère Research Institute (Bruyère Continuing Care), coordinates the multidisciplinary team of researchers, who have been awarded a New Emerging Team (NET) grant from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR).

This grant application was ranked first among six teams competing nationally for a NET grant and resulted in infrastructure funding in the amount of $1,267,000 over a five-year period.

The overall theme of the research is End-of-Life Care for Seniors (ELCS), an important, but until recently, neglected area of research because of the limited collaboration between specialists in geriatrics and palliative care.

This research program considers the quality of end-of-life care for seniors in terms of personal and social environments, structure, outcomes and provision of care. Sub-themes include research on rural health, volunteers, patient’s sense of burden, delirium, and transitions through palliative care health services.
